Buchanan, NY – Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials held a public meeting Thursday night to discuss their most recent safety assessment of operations at the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plants. WAMC's Greg Fry reports that a majority of the hundreds in attendance made it clear that they want the plant closed ...
Those opposed to Indian Point's continued operations promoted the public meeting as the last chance to voice their opinion before hearings regarding the plant's license renewal begin later this year. However, NRC officials began the meeting with their 2010 safety assessment, with calls of "liar" following from audience members.
NRC officials attempted to explain their scrutinized response to this year's nuclear disaster in Japan, but after a short time, that portion of the meeting agenda was scrapped, and an overwhelming majority of public input against the plant's operations was given to NRC inspectors on-hand.
