Buchanan, NY – The top official at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission toured the Indian Point Nuclear Plant in Buchanan, New York Tuesday. WAMC's Greg Fry was there, and reports on a day filled with protests, and calls for the plant to be closed...
Before NRC Chairman Gregory Jaczko even made his way out of the plant to speak with media, protesters made their voices heard. This audio was captured through a phone recording...
"They have no containment, and they have one thousand tons of highly radioactive material."
New York State troopers eventually escorted those protesters off the Indian Point property. Jaczko, who toured the plant with two downstate congressional representatives, says right now, there's no reason to believe Indian Point isn't meeting NRC standards for operation.
"If we find a situation with any of our plants in which they don't, we take the appropriate action, whether that's shutting them down, or other types of corrective action."
Operating licenses for units 2 and 3 at the plant expire in 2013 and 2015, and the plant's operator, Entergy Corporation, is currently attempting to have those licenses renewed.
