Albany, NY – New York State's annual Holiday Memorial Observance honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior was held in Albany this morning. Capital District Bureau Chief Dave Lucas attended the gathering and files this report.

The backdrop onstage displayed "Black and White Together" and "We are not afraid" as Albany celebrated in song, dance and speech the life of Doctor Martin Luther King, Junior. Today would have been his 82nd birthday - Congressman Paul Tonko told the crowd King inspired the nation and the world. Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings hailed Dr. King as a visionary.

Keynote Speaker Reverend Dr. Eugene Callendar began his career in social justice in 1950. He met Dr. King in 1955. He commented on the landmark "I have a dream" speech. Charaka Maul drove up from Brooklyn to attend the celebration --- she believes society, thanks to Dr. King, has become more blended --- and that Barack Obama has been a great catalyst for positive change. Marlon Anderson ran for Mayor of Albany last year. He cherishes "Freedom 2011 style" but warns against complacency. Both Anderson and Albany Bishop Howard Hubbard remember Dr. King as "a voice that continues to call us to accountability."

A Community Walk immediately followed the Convention Center event - marchers braved the cold and headed off to the city of Albany's Dr. King Memorial in Lincoln Park.
