Albany, NY – Financial Justice advocates from every corner of New York have joined forces lobbying passage of the Consumer Credit Fairness Act, which would prevent abusive debt collection lawsuits. Capital District Bureau Chief Dave Lucas reports.

NYRL is a statewide coalition of 150 groups that work on financial justice issues that face New Yorkers ... members are concerned about what they label rampant debt collection abuses by Debt-buying companies - which engage in systematic collection abuses that target low-income New Yorkers and people of color. The Consumer Credit Fairness Act would prevent debt-buyers from filing meritless lawsuits and getting judgments on invalid debts. The bill has both Senate and Assembly support. A report issued last month by NEDAP and other groups report calls upon the New York State Attorney General, the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs and the Federal Trade Commission to continue aggressive action against the debt collection industry.
