Plattsburgh, NY – A new study says more flexible security is needed at U.S. and Canadian border crossings in order to improve commerce and trade between the two countries. WAMC North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley has more.

The Detroit Regional Chamber worked with the Washington, D.C.-based Brookings Institution on the report: Toward A New Frontier - Improving the U.S. Canadian Border . It notes that since 9-11 Washington's attitude towards the Canadian and Mexican border has been one-size-fits-all, yet the relationship with Canada is unique and requires a greater focus on commerce. Detroit Regional Chamber Vice President of Government Relations Sarah Hubbard says problems continue to plague cross-border business and industry interests.

The report criticizes the homogenization of border policies and lack of sensitivity to regional concerns along the northern border. Cross-Border Development Corporation in Rouses Point, NY helps businesses locate in New York and the U.S. Founder and President Mark Barie says the report touches on some of the negative impacts of improving national security since 9-11.

Buffalo-Niagara Partnership Policy Director Craig Turner notes that the report updates previous reports on the status of border concerns. Turner says it reflects the main point in the Partnership's agenda - that there is a difference between the northern and southern border.
