A special election for a Burlington, Vermont City Council opening is being held today.

Mayor Miro Weinberger appointed and the city council ratified Brian Pine to serve as the new director of the city’s Community and Economic Development Office in May. At the time Pine was the Ward 3 Progressive city councilor, and as soon as his appointment was approved, he resigned from his council seat.

That triggered a special ward election. Voters in the center city ward are choosing between three candidates: Independent Owen Milne, Progressive Joe Magee and Republican Christopher-Aaron Felker. The key issue in the campaign is the council’s mandate to reduce the number of police officers by 30 percent and resultant public safety issues. Other concerns are the CityPlace development in the downtown core and affordable housing.

The winner will serve until the end of the current term April 4th, 2022.

Polls are open until 7 p.m.
