Last year, potentially cancer-causing PCBs were found in the Burlington, Vermont high school’s buildings and grounds. The school board has now decided to abandon clean up and renovations.

On Tuesday the Burlington school board voted unanimously to build a new school rather than try to clean up the contaminated buildings. Mayor Miro Weinberger says the situation is troubling.

“This is a crisis for the community that we do not have a permanent high school at this moment," said the mayor.

In March students began attending in-person classes in a temporary refurbished Macy's department store in the city’s downtown.

Officials must now identify a location for a new permanent school building.
