Voters in two Vermont towns have voted to keep their elementary schools open as the communities face declining enrollment.
Residents of Addison and Ferrisburgh in Addison County overwhelmingly voted on Tuesday against a proposal to close the Addison Central School and Ferrisburgh Central School, which are in the same district.
The Burlington Free Press reports the vote in Addison was 123 in favor of closure and 373 against; in Ferrisburgh the results were 160 for closure and 884 opposed.
The Addison Northwest School District has said taxes would need to be raised to keep the schools open and programs will be eliminated or reduced, including athletics, arts, world languages, advancement placement courses, afterschool care, enrichment, transportation and other non-essential programs.
