The Tyler Street Lab community space in Pittsfield, Massachusetts is closed – but organizers say, not for long.

Kate Lauzon is one of the volunteers behind the Lab, which has been located in the Morningside neighborhood.

“When we opened back in January, February, the idea was for it to just be a pop-up to see what could happen in that type of space," said Lauzon. "We’ve learned immensely. So really, the pop-up did what it was supposed to do. And Goodwill has now exited as our fiscal agent, however, the city of Pittsfield has agreed to step in as interim fiscal agent until we can go forward and be sustainable as our own entity.”

Lauzon says the space will briefly reopen later this year in its current location, but may relocate – preferably in Morningside. She says the Lab is in discussion with the landlord, Mill Town Capital, about what will happen next. After school programs, community oriented nonprofits, the Berkshire County Chapter of the NAACP, and other groups were using the space.

Josh Landes has been WAMC's Berkshire Bureau Chief since February 2018, following stints at WBGO Newark and WFMU East Orange. A passionate advocate for Western Massachusetts, Landes was raised in Pittsfield and attended Hampshire College in Amherst, receiving his bachelor's in Ethnomusicology and Radio Production. His free time is spent with his cat Harry, experimental electronic music, and exploring the woods.
