Big E Opens With Quest For A New Attendance Record

ESE

The largest fair in the Northeast opened its gates in western Massachusetts to the public Friday morning.

More than 1.5 million people went to the Big E last year at the Eastern States Exposition fairgrounds in West Springfield. In a bid to draw even more people to this year’s fair, the number of musical acts has been dramatically expanded.  About 80 shows are scheduled over the course of the fair’s 17-day run.

WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Gene Cassidy, president of the Big E.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
