Momentum Seen Building For Plastic Bag Ban In Massachusetts

A shopper with a single-use plastic bag

New York, beginning next March, will ban retailers from giving customers single-use plastic shopping bags. Is Massachusetts next?

More than 90 communities in Massachusetts, including Boston, already have restrictions in place. The Pittsfield City Council recently passed a plastic bag ordinance.  The Springfield City Council has a public hearing scheduled next week.

A statewide ban was the subject of a legislative hearing at the State House this week.

WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Janet Domenitz, executive director of MassPIRG.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
