The Berkshire Mall, which has lost a number of major retailers in recent years, has been closed for much of the past week due to power issues.

Jonathan Butler – CEO of 1Berkshire, the county’s economic development group – says the mall in Lanesborough has lost a great deal of the attraction it once held over surrounding communities.

“You know, there’s still more progress than can be made in our downtowns, but they’ve become once again centers of activities, destinations for foot traffic, whether it be residents or visitors,” Butler told WAMC.

The mall just outside Pittsfield has witnessed the departures of major retailers like Best Buy, Sears and JC Penny in recent years. As of Thursday, the Mall’s Facebook page still indicated the facility was closed. Mall representatives did not return requests for comment.

Josh Landes has been WAMC's Berkshire Bureau Chief since February 2018 after working at stations including WBGO Newark and WFMU East Orange. A passionate advocate for Berkshire County, Landes was raised in Pittsfield and attended Hampshire College in Amherst, receiving his bachelor's in Ethnomusicology and Radio Production.
