Vermont residents who don't identify as male or female will be able to choose another gender on their driver's licenses as soon as this summer.
The Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles has announced that residents will have the option to select "other" as their gender as part of their new computer license system.

The Burlington Free Press reports the marking on the license will be "X," as recommended by members of the LGBTQIA Alliance of Vermont.

Vermont Gov. Phil Scott says offering the third gender option is consistent with the state's values of inclusion and acceptance.

The Law Enforcement Advisory Board previously said members felt it wouldn't impede police officers' work.

Vermont will become the seventh state to offer an option besides male or female on the document.
