Revenue rebounded a bit in February at the first resort casino in Massachusetts.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission reported that gross gaming revenue at MGM Springfield in February totaled $21.5 million, an increase of 9 percent over January.

Since its opening last August, the casino’s monthly take has lagged behind projections.

MGM Springfield President Mike Mathis told the casino regulators at a meeting last month that he was confident the gambling revenue would pick up.

"We are aggressively working on increasing these monthly numbers and we feel good about a lot of the programs we are putting into place," said Mathis

MGM paid the state more than $5 million in taxes in February.  The state’s cut is 25 percent of the gross gaming revenues.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
