NECHE President Talks Accreditation, State Of New England Higher Ed

The New England Commission of Higher Education logo.

Barbara Brittingham is the president of the New England Commission of Higher Education, which provides accreditation to over 230 colleges in the region. That list includes Berkshire Community College in Pittsfield and Williams College in Williamstown. In early March, Southern Vermont College in Bennington, Vermont chose to close after learning it failed to successfully defend its accreditation to the commission. Brittingham spoke to WAMC about the work the commission does, and why a number of smaller colleges in the region are struggling.

Josh Landes has been WAMC's Berkshire Bureau Chief since February 2018 after working at stations including WBGO Newark and WFMU East Orange. A passionate advocate for Berkshire County, Landes was raised in Pittsfield and attended Hampshire College in Amherst, receiving his bachelor's in Ethnomusicology and Radio Production. You can reach him at jlandes@wamc.org with questions, tips, and/or feedback.
