Barbara Brittingham is the president of the New England Commission of Higher Education, which provides accreditation to over 230 colleges in the region. That list includes Berkshire Community College in Pittsfield and Williams College in Williamstown. In early March, Southern Vermont College in Bennington, Vermont chose to close after learning it failed to successfully defend its accreditation to the commission. Brittingham spoke to WAMC about the work the commission does, and why a number of smaller colleges in the region are struggling.
