President Donald Trump often cites the threat of terrorists entering the United States from Mexico in his push for a border wall. But the only time people with apparent terrorist intentions have been caught crossing a U.S. land border, they came from Canada.
In one of those cases in the tiny Vermont town of Richford, in 1987 now-retired police chief Richard Jewett found a bomb one man had carried across the border into the United States from Quebec.
In 1999, an Algerian man from Montreal was caught by border agents with bomb components in the trunk of his car after he tried to enter the United States from Canada through a Washington state border post.
Emily Gilbert of the University of Toronto says there have been more terror-related cases on the U.S. Canadian border than the Mexican border.
