Two western Massachusetts communities have been chosen to participate in a state program that promotes small-scale solar power installations.
Springfield and Longmeadow have been awarded a $5,000 marketing grant to take part in Solarize Mass.
The program, which is administered by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, provides discounted bulk pricing for people to install solar panels.
Mike Kocsmiersky, a volunteer with the program, said the goal is to get 150 installations in Springfield.
"This is small amounts of energy, but you repeat that thousands of times and it starts adding up," said Kocmiersky.
Since the program started seven years ago there have been 3,200 solar installations on roof-tops statewide.
