Dozens of police departments and sheriffs' offices across Vermont now have drug take-back boxes where people can dispose of unused and unwanted prescription medication.
The expansion of the secure drop box locations to the lobbies of Vermont State Police barracks will provide a way to remove potentially dangerous drugs from homes.
The collected drugs will be disposed of by the Drug Enforcement Administration.
State police announced Monday they are joining 10 sheriffs' departments and 39 law-enforcement agencies throughout the state that accept prescription medication from the public for disposal.
Public Safety Commissioner Thomas Anderson says the program provides another opportunity to get what he calls "this poison out of Vermonters' medicine cabinets."
The service is made possible through an agreement with the Lamoille County Sheriff's Department.
