First Ultra-Fast Electric Vehicle Charging Station Installed In Massachusetts

WAMC

The fastest electric vehicle charging station in the United States was activated Wednesday in western Massachusetts.

Capable of fueling an electric vehicle for a 200 mile trip in about ten minutes, the charging station located in Chicopee is the first of more than 100 planned across the country by Volkswagon subsidiary Electrify America.

Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Martin Suuberg said Massachusetts could use more of the stations to encourage electric vehicle purchases to help meet the state’s greenhouse gas emission targets.

"Right now, greenhouse gas emissions represent 40 percent from the transportation sector and we need to do better," said Suuberg.

Massachusetts currently has fewer than 12,000 electric vehicles registered.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
