Monday was the first day of school for would-be card dealers at the soon-to-open MGM casino in Springfield.

The first casino school in Massachusetts, operated by a partnership of two local community colleges, opened Monday in downtown Springfield.

Dewight Armstrong of Enfield Connecticut is excited to be in the first group of gaming school students.

"It is something I've looked forward to, so lets get started," Armstrong said during a tour of the school earlier this month. "It's another first for Springfield."

The school has 30 gaming tables, exactly like the ones on a casino floor.  There are classes on how to deal poker and blackjack and run other games including roulette and craps.

Students who complete two table-game courses are guaranteed an audition with MGM.

Another round of classes will start in April.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
