Vermont Lawmakers Continue To Debate Airbnb Regulations

Vermont legislators are still considering a bill that would require Airbnb users to register with the state.
The proposed bill would create a statewide registry that includes information about industry standards and taxes. Airbnb had previously agreed to pay a rooms-and-meal tax for its hosts.

Vermont Public Radio reports under the measure, hosts would have to pay an annual $130 fee. Properties would also have to meet the same health and safety standards that motels and inns are follow.

Democratic Senator Michael Sirotkin says the short-term rental industry is growing and is helping tourism in the state. Sirotkin says lawmakers just want to ensure the practice remains safe.

Some hosts say the bill might scare off prospective renters.

Airbnb is cooperating with the state throughout the legislative process.
