NY Governor OKs Fines For Illegal Airbnbs

New York is cracking down on Airbnb rentals with one of the nation's toughest laws on short-term rentals.

A bill signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo authorizes fines of up to $7,500 for tenants or landlords who advertise rentals for 30 days or less on the popular online rental website. Some types of rentals would be exempt from the law, and enforcement will be a challenge. Airbnb had urged Cuomo to veto the measure.  Supporters say the law will help stop illegal, unlicensed hotels and protect affordable residential housing in New York City.
