Vermont's Chief Medical Examiner Reinstated After Probe

The Vermont Health Department says the state's chief medical examiner has been reinstated after being placed on leave amid a human resources investigation.
Steven Shapiro had been on paid leave since Jan. 9 and was reinstated Monday.

His lawyer, Brooks McArthur, tells the Burlington Free Press that Shapiro had been accused of creating a hostile work environment after he confronted others in the Chief Medical Examiner's Office about serious errors in internal procedures.

McArthur believes that Shapiro's leave was unwarranted. He said "false allegations" could have cost Shapiro his job and damaged his reputation.

Shapiro has been chief medical examiner since 2006, doing autopsies and at times providing court testimony on those findings.
