Prototype Of Subway Car That Will Be Built In Springfield Arrives For Testing

MBTA via Twitter

The first prototype of new subway cars that will eventually be manufactured in western Massachusetts has been delivered to the greater Boston transit agency.

The new subway car will be tested by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority on the Orange Line to make sure the modern vehicle fits into the tunnels and stations of the nation’s oldest transit system.

The prototype was built at the CRRC factory in China and demonstrated there for MBTA officials in October.

CRRC has a contract to produce more than 400 new subway cars for the MBTA at a 204,000 -square foot factory the Chinese government-owned company has built in Springfield.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
