Berkshires political institution John Barrett will take his new state House seat for the first time Wednesday.

In last week’s special election for the 1st Berkshire District state House seat, Democrat John Barrett defeated Republican Christine Canning.

Republican Governor Charlie Baker will officially swear-in the 70-year-old Barrett at the State House Wednesday. Barrett served as mayor of North Adams for 26 years until 2009.

“Well, it’s never something I expected to be doing at this stage of my life,” Barrett says.

Things have come full-circle for Barrett. In 1982, he lost in a primary election for the same seat he’ll take Wednesday.
