Massachusetts is less than a year away from opening its first full-scale resort casino.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission said the opening date for the MGM Springfield casino is expected to be September 8, 2018.

Construction continues on schedule for the $950 million casino, hotel, and retail complex in downtown Springfield.

Street paving, sidewalk repairs, and other downtown improvements are planned in advance of the casino’s opening date, according to Mayor Domenic Sarno.

" We are going to make ( downtown) clean and safe and aesthetically pleasing," said Sarno.

The state’s other licensed resort casino, the Wynn Boston Harbor Casino is expected to open in 2019.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
