The end of an era for the U.S. Air Force will occur Thursday in western Massachusetts.
The last operational C-5A Galaxy model jet is scheduled to fly out of the Westover Air Force Reserve base in Chicopee.
Base spokesman MSgt Andrew Biscoe said the legacy model of the largest aircraft in the Air Force fleet will be retired to a so-called “boneyard” in Arizona.
"We've had these C-5A models at this base for about 30 years and it is the last C-5A not only here but in the Air Force," said Biscoe.
Westover is getting a new fleet of 8 quieter and more fuel-efficient C-5M Galaxy jets. The final one of the new models should arrive next summer.
