A group in Vermont is working to purchase land in order to preserve a collection of prehistoric Native American rock carvings.
The Vermont Commission on Native American Affairs and other conservationist groups are working together with the Abenaki tribe to preserve a group of petroglyphs in Brattleboro. The petroglyphs are located at an ancient ceremonial site where the West and Connecticut Rivers meet. However, developers are considering properties near the site.
The Brattleboro Reformer reports commission member Rich Holschuh says the conservation effort is part of a larger movement to help the Abenaki preserve their history and re-establish themselves. The Abenaki also hope to preserve the Hogle Wildlife Sanctuary for recreational activities.
Holschuh hopes lawmakers will ultimately lend support to the land purchase.
