A western Massachusetts woman has claimed the second-largest lottery prize in U.S. history.
Mavis Wancyk, a 53-year-old mother of two adult children from Chicopee, was the winner of Wednesday night’s $758 million Powerball Lottery jackpot.
"The first thing I want to do is I just want to sit back and relax," she said. " I had a pipe dream and it came true."
Wancyk, who said she had worked at Mercy Medical Center for 32 years, told reporters she already called and told them she won’t be coming back.
The Lottery said she chose to take the lump sum payment, which comes out to about $338 million after taxes.
She bought the ticket at a Pride convenience store in Chicopee. The owner of the store said he plans to donate the entire $50,000 commission to local charities.
