PVTA Set To Shift Springfield Service Hub To Union Station

WAMC

The grand-opening celebrations are this weekend at Springfield’s restored Union Station, but the new transit center will only partially be operational.

The Pioneer Valley Transit Authority will be operating out of Union Station starting Sunday afternoon, but not Peter Pan Bus Lines or Greyhound.  Also, some retail service tenants are not ready to open, according to Springfield Chief Development Officer Kevin Kennedy.

" I would say we will be fully operational in terms of inter-city ( bus) and all the retail and everything by the end of July, beginning of August," Kennedy said.

Beginning Sunday, train passengers will be able to use a new tunnel from the station’s main concourse to reach the boarding platform.

There is no change in Amtrak’s scheduled Springfield service.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
