Building That Housed Longtime Neighborhood Market Razed

WAMC

A landmark building near where the MGM Springfield casino is being built is coming under the wrecking ball.

The brick building that once housed Albano’s Market, where generations of people enjoyed Italian ice made from a secret family recipe, is being razed along with four other structures on the one-acre  site to make way for redevelopment.

In 2015, sisters Filomena Bruschi and Theresa D’Angelantonio closed the market their parents had opened 73 years earlier.

Real estate investors paid $1.1 million for the property, which is two blocks from where the MGM casino will open in 2018.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
