Massachusetts Tax Revenue Rises In May, Budget Deficit Remains

The Massachusetts State House

State tax collections in Massachusetts were up in May, reversing a months-long trend of revenue coming in below projections.

Even though May’s revenues came in at $30 million above the benchmark, according to the Massachusetts Department of Revenue, the state is still facing a roughly $400 million budget deficit with just a month left in the fiscal year.

Gov. Charlie Baker continues to sound confident that cuts can be avoided.

"We have a $40 billion budget, we have a $400 million problem," said Baker. " In absolute terms it is a big number, in relative terms we should be able to manage our way through."

Baker said cuts were avoided in last year’s state budget when revenue was lower than expected because there were line items where the appropriations were not fully spent.
