A lawsuit accuses the administration of Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker of denying emergency shelter to homeless mothers and children.
The suit filed by Boston Legal Services lawyers on behalf of five women alleges they’ve been illegally denied shelter because Baker is trying to fulfill a campaign promise to stop putting homeless families in motels.
The administration strongly denied the allegations in statements to the Boston Globe.
Baker has increased funding for rental vouchers and other programs aimed at preventing homelessness.
"Family homelessness in Massachusetts is a human tragedy that clearly must be rethought and reconsidered with respect to how these families are served," Baker said.
The number of families sheltered in motels at state expense has dropped from 1,500 when Baker took office in 2015 to fewer than 160.
