A federal court ruling has cast uncertainty over the Massachusetts casino landscape.
A federal judge said the U.S. government lacked the authority to designate a sovereign reservation in southeastern Massachusetts where an Indian tribe began building a $ 1 billion casino earlier this year.
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission rejected a license for a commercial casino in the same area after chairman Stephen Crosby said he was underwhelmed by the developer’s plans.
" That is not to denigrate it inherently, its just that it may not match the completely reasonable constraints of this particular marketplace," said Crosby.
The state’s casino gambling law authorized one casino license for the southeastern part of the state. Licenses for casinos have been awarded to MGM Springfield in western Massachusetts and to Wynn Resorts in greater Boston.
