The largest emergency homeless shelter in western Massachusetts is planning to merge with a regional social service provider.
Friends of the Homeless in Springfield is pursuing a merger with Clinical & Support Options, a Northampton-based nonprofit agency that operates mental health and addiction clinics throughout western Massachusetts.
Bill Miller, executive director of the homeless shelter, said that becoming a subsidiary of the larger organization will allow Friends of the Homeless to reduce its costs and offer more help to homeless men and women.
"I think this will be a great partnership and will help us improve our services all the more," said Miller in an interview.
The merger is subject to approval by the Massachusetts Attorney General.
