Opening Of Rail Platform Delayed At Springfield's New Union Station

WAMC

Officials have announced a delay in the completion of a major transportation project in western Massachusetts.

The new train boarding platform at Springfield’s Union Station must be redesigned because it is six inches narrower than allowed under federal regulations.

Springfield Chief Development officer Kevin Kennedy expects a delay of about six months in opening the new rail platform.

" It is another bump in the road in a many decade-old project," said Kennedy.

Kennedy said the rest of the $88.5 million rehabilitation of Union Station is on schedule. The new intermodal transportation center is expected to open to passengers in January 2017.

City officials said  MassDOT will pay for the cost overruns for redesigning the rail platform.

Until the new rail platform is built, passengers will board trains next to an existing Amtrak waiting area.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
