Water and sewer rates are going up in the greater Springfield, Massachusetts area.
The Springfield Water and Sewer Commission approved a 4 percent rate increase that means the annual bill for the typical household will increase by $36.60.
The commission said the rate hikes were driven by the need to make critical repairs to the system’s infrastructure. Executive Director Joshua Schimmel said a number of big projects are planned or underway.
" A lot of the bigger projects going on right now are redundancy projects to make sure we can get our water from the source down to Springfield," he explained.
The agency supplies water to the city of Springfield and four suburbs and provides partial or emergency service to a half-dozen communities.
