Massachusetts State Police Officer Fatally Shot By Suspect

A Massachusetts police officer was fatally shot Sunday by a suspect who was later killed in a shootout that left a state trooper wounded.

Police officer Ronald Tarantino Jr. was gunned down at 12:30 Sunday morning during a traffic stop in the central Massachusetts town of Auburn.  Neighbors on the suburban street where it happened said they heard rapid fire gunshots and then saw numerous police cars converge on the scene. Late Sunday afternoon police surrounded a house in the town of Oxford, and as state troopers were searching inside, a man burst from a closet and began shooting.

Troopers returned fire, killing the suspect, identified as 35 year old Jorge Zambrano of Worcester.  The wounded trooper is expected to survive.  The 42-year-old officer who was killed leaves a wife and three children.
