For the first time in more than a decade, North Adams Public Schools has a new superintendent. With an enrollment of 1,500, the North Adams district recently approved a three-year contract with Webster Public Schools Superintendent Barbara Malkas. A Berkshire County resident, Malkas was an administrator with Pittsfield Public Schools and an assistant principal with McCann Technical School in North Adams.
“Education is a major component of economic infrastructure,” Malkas said. “That is going to be something that I’m really trying to create some focus around and increased understanding around.”
Malkas expects to start in July. North Adams Superintendent James Montepare is retiring after more than 40 years with the district.
