Connecticut state employee unions are running television, radio and online ads hoping to stop layoff notices that Governor Dannel Malloy’s administration is handing out to close a budget deficit. The Connecticut chapter of American Federation of Teachers and Council 4 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which represent more than 22,000 state workers, are urging lawmakers and Malloy "to stop firing people" and instead impose higher taxes on the wealthy.

“Because there’s nothing fair about our public workers paying higher tax rates than the richest one percent,” the ad proclaims.

The third in a series of television ads from SEIU District 1199 urges lawmakers to protect the services important to taxpayers.

They come as Malloy's office continues to issue pink slips to help cover a deficit in the fiscal year beginning July 1 that’s projected at more than $900 million. As of Tuesday, 236 unionized and nonunionized workers have received layoff notices with more expected.
