Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy's administration is officially notifying state employee union leaders that job cuts may be coming. The head of the Office of Policy and Management's labor relations unit sent a letter this week to seven union leaders, informing them that new organizational plans for state agencies "may include reductions in force."
The Democratic governor has warned layoffs are looming as the state faces budget deficit problems. His budget director, Ben Barnes, said in February that Malloy's spending plan could eliminate several thousand state jobs, but it's unclear how many would involve layoffs.
Senate Republican Leader Len Fasano says there are small changes the unions could agree to, such as furlough days, to help avoid layoffs.
