Connecticut U.S. Senator Chris Murphy is urging his Republican colleagues to hold a confirmation process for a Supreme Court Justice nominee. The Democrat showcased a sign reading “Do Your Job” as he spoke on the Senate floor Tuesday. Murphy says refusing to confirm a Supreme Court nominee before the end of President Obama’s second term could set a precedent where no nominees of a lame duck president are confirmed especially if the opposite party controls Congress.

“Just do your job,” Murphy said. “Go through the hearing process. Meet with the nominee. Bring that nominee to a vote on the Senate floor.”

Republicans argue the nomination should wait until a new president takes office. Conservative Justice Antonin Scalia died in February.
