Burlington Voters Approve Pilot Road Project

Voters in Burlington have approved a pilot project that would turn a busy section of North Avenue from four lanes to two, with a turning lane, bike lanes and new crosswalks.
Supporters of the project say they think it will improve safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers.

Voters in the New North End, where the project is located oppose it, saying it will make traffic congestion worse. Many of those residents think city hall will make the project permanent without their input.

Mayor Miro Weinberger is concerned about their skepticism.   “We’re talking about changes that have the potential of reducing accidents.  Really making that avenue a safer street.  And I think that we should still experiment with that.”

The Burlington Public Works Department plans to start work on the project this spring.
