Derelict House Near Youth Center Demolished

WAMC

A long-vacant house next to a Springfield, Massachusetts youth center that officials said was a magnet for drug-dealers has been torn down.

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno said the blighted property would catch his eye whenever he visited the legendary Dunbar Community Center. He said it was frustrating that it took years to go through the legal and regulatory process to demolish it.

" So, I am glad get it down, " said Sarno. " We are going to continue to be aggressive in getting derelict buildings down."

The city used $48,000 in federal funds to pay for the cost of demolition and asbestos abatement.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
