Berkshire area organizations are mourning the death of a local artist famous around the world.Born in Newburgh, New York in 1923 Ellsworth Kelly was known for his minimalist and abstract paintings, sculptures and prints. Kelly died at his Spencertown home Sunday. He was 92. The U.S. Army veteran who developed camouflage designs unveiled an exhibit featuring Monet at the Clark Art Institute last year, described by the museum’s then-senior curator Richard Rand.
“Kelly’s signature style really comes out of this early engagement with Monet’s work when Kelly was a young artist in Paris in the 1940s and early 1950s,” said Rand.
The Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation says it is grateful for Kelly’s partnership. The artist’s foundation gave nearly $2 million to the charitable organization over the last 15 years.
