A beloved western Massachusetts spiritual leader will be remembered Monday on the first anniversary of his death.

A noon mass will be said Monday at St. Michael’s Cathedral in Springfield in honor of Bishop Emeritus Joseph Maguire. The man remembered fondly as the “people’s bishop” died last year at the age of 95.

Maguire, who was the son of a Boston police detective, was installed as the fifth bishop of the Diocese of Springfield in 1977 and served through 1991.

Joseph Garde, who was ordained a deacon by Maguire, said he never met anyone with more compassion.

" For the less fortunate and the sick he was always there," said Garde in an interview last year.

Monday’s mass, which is open to the public, will be celebrated by Bishop Mitchell Rozanski. The diocese said members of Maguire’s family are expected to attend.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
