The top brass of MGM Resorts International traveled to Springfield Thursday to mend fences with Mayor Domenic Sarno, the biggest booster of their Massachusetts casino project.
Emerging from a private meeting in the mayor’s office, MGM CEO James Murren said he apologized for a communications lapse that left Sarno in the dark about a proposal to downsize the casino project.
"Absolutely we should have talked to the city. Mistake on MGM," said Murren.
Sarno said the meeting with Murren and other MGM officials was “reassuring,” but Sarno has not publically committed to supporting the changes MGM wants.
Murren said the new design that would reduce the square footage of the Springfield casino by 14 percent will make it a better project.
MGM is promising to make a public presentation in mid-November to fully explain the new plans.
