MassWorks Grants Awarded To Three Western Mass. Cities

WAMC

Governor Charlie Baker Thursday announced almost $10 million for infrastructure projects in three western Massachusetts cities.

Baker said the projects that will be paid for in Chicopee, Holyoke and Springfield, with funds from the MassWorks program are consistent with his administration’s urban agenda.

"I think MassWorks has proven to be a terrific tool for us as a Commonwealth to help local communities move forward on projects they might not be able to do otherwise that really beneficial," said Baker.

Chicopee is getting $2.6 million for water, sewer and electrical work to support the redevelopment of an abandoned mill building into apartments.

Holyoke receives $4 million for streets, sidewalks and parks in a public housing project.

Springfield is getting $2.7 million to make changes to a dangerous traffic intersection.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
