The Massachusetts Gaming Commission plans to review fantasy sports websites to determine if the operations are legal and if they should be regulated.
Chairman Stephen Crosby said the five-member commission will begin a discussion of fantasy sports at its regularly scheduled meeting Oct. 29th.
Rachel Volberg, a gambling researcher from UMass Amherst said the recent explosive popularity of fantasy sports is similar to what happened with online poker a decade ago.
"It was something that many many young men, in particular. got involved with," Volberg said. "That fad is now sort of gone."
Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey said state law does not appear to ban the fantasy sports operations.
One of the biggest companies in the new industry, DraftKings, is based in Massachusetts.
