The citizen group that has raised concerns over a proposed athletic turf field at Berkshire Community College is appealing state approval of the project.A dozen people have signed an appeal challenging the Department of Environmental Protection’s approved set of working conditions at the West Street campus in Pittsfield. Group spokesperson Carol Zullo says they are concerned about the field’s potential environmental impacts on surrounding wetlands and its rubber material.

“It’s just the PCB-thing,” Zullo said. “People are going to look back, scratch their head and say ‘Yeah, you know what? This wasn’t a good idea.’”

The $2 million community-driven project is slated to receive $1.2 million in state and city funding. BCC is hoping for an April groundbreaking.
